The Diaries of Godfrey Tallents of Newark 1829-1839

Regular price £6.00

Edited by Richard Gaunt

During the 1820s and 30s, Nottinghamshire witnessed a number of dramatic episodes in its political and social history and Godfrey Tallents (1812-1839) had a ring-side seat from which to observe them.

Tallents’ diaries provide vivid new testimony concerning the Reform Bill Riots of 1831, the turbulent electoral history of Newark-on-Trent, the early political experience of William Ewart Gladstone and the administration of law and order in the county.  They also illuminate the busy round of social and legal engagement which Tallents pursued in the first decade of his professional life.
